  • The Summer House by the Sea- Jenny Oliver

Rating- 5/10 Total summer read. That's how I'd describe this book. It was delightful and had a touching heartfelt story. It made me want to be on holiday so bad & lounge on a sun bed sipping sangria by the beach. Bliss. It took a while to really get into the book, but once you hit the middle of it then your in for a joyous ride to the end. It follows a lady called Ava who goes to her recently deceased grandmother's summerhouse in Spain. She discovers her own past and gets more in touch with herself and gets closer to her family, there's also a sweet love story mixed in there too. I also loved how much food was a big part of their lives, and enjoying simple homemade food that feeds the soul. This book focuses on finding the real meaning to life and enjoying every minute of being alive and happy. Basically the YOLO philosophy. It had a lovely (kinda cheesy) ending too which I liked. Not the most gripping book to read, but just generally an easy Summery type of book, hence the halfway rating. Although I gotta comment on the cover of the book, it's so damn pretty.. :) Grab your copy here on Amazon Books!

  • Noughts & Crosses- Malorie Blackman

Rating- 9/10 Game changer. I struggled so much to write this review, this book was so much more than what I thought it would be. It follows two characters- Callum, a white boy who's a Nought, and Sephy, a black girl who is a Cross. Now, noughts and crosses don't mix, in fact, the noughts are the inferior race in this world, and Crosses basically run the place and are the superior more respected race. The whole race divide is completely switched around meaning, black and whites are switched around. At times, I really struggled to actually let it sink in that noughts/Callum, are the ones who suffer in this world. It properly sank in around the 10th chapter lol. So surreal. They have no rights, no equality, they were slaves but are no longer slaves, yet they can still only do so little while the Crosses rule the country. It's all so politically twisted. Callum & Sephy are in love and they try to make it work, but they have so many obstacles to overcome, Callum hates her for being the superior race, and for always trying to help when it comes out as pity for the Noughts, it's all so confusing, for them I mean, and Callum wants to do something good with his life and make changes but his race doesn't allow him to even come close to anything like that. They love each other, but the cost of loving each other is too high and almost unbearable. It had a Romeo and Juliet vibes too, lovers being torn apart by their overbearing families. Society really frowns upon their love or any noughts and crosses mixing that it almost tears them apart. Apart from the whole race issue, the book also is about equality, and justice, rights of all human beings, being brave and fighting for what you believe in. It's so touching to read. Also, I liked the fact that the book was based in our time, sort of now-ish, and not in the past. But it makes it so uncomfortable because we have come so far from slavery, yet in this book, not much has changed in terms of equality and rights to all human races. It's still so backwards. So interesting to read. I felt many mixed emotions reading this book, anger, and sorrow, pain, anguish, I also felt the strong bond between Callum & Sephy, and how much they really loved each other, so deeply despite what they had to go through, and how their skin color didn't matter and how society viewed them. So painful but so beautifully written. I found myself thinking about Callum and Sephy when I wasn't reading the book, and would itch to read a chapter or two to see what was happening with them. As a black female, I felt at times uncomfortable or saddened to be reminded that these things did exist and if I was born on a different decade I would be faced with such issues, it broke my heart to remember that. But also felt grateful for how far we have come to tackle equal rights and racism in this world. A very gripping story. Although this is a series, I don't think I could stomach the other Malorie Blackman books. I felt that this was enough for me, and absolutely loved this story and would highly recommend it to be added to any reading list! Absolutely a great read. Two thumbs up! 👍👍 You gotta get yours right here on Amazon Books!

  • The Cherry Tree Cafe- Heidi Swain

Rating- 7/10 I gotta take a minute and just appreciate how pretty this book cover is. Isn't it just so gorgeous! I literary read it because of the super pretty title, it's font and the super pretty illustration. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was such a pleasant read. Just so pleasant! The story was about a girl who moves back to her hometown after leaving the big smoke (London), and ends up opening a cafe with her childhood friend, and she obviously falls in love with her high school crush. It's just delightful, i also liked that it was also a crafty book, in the sense that the main character liked to sew and do a lot of crafty hobbies which she turned into a business. Right up my alley, I really enjoyed reading this book, totally gave me feel good vibes and it had a great ending too with heartfelt emotions. The book cover definitely does justice to the story ! So worth a buy! Get yours HERE on Amazon Books.

  • The One That Got Away- Annabel Kantari

Rating- 2/10 Waste of my time. Hated it. What a weird book. I was enticed by the cover, title and colours of the book lol weirdly enough, I have now learnt to not judge a book by its cover. It's about a woman (a very annoying woman at that) who rekindles a romance with her high school sweetheart, then they get married and she turns out to be a total psychopath. The book literary has no point, no twists, not gripping, terrible ending too! So unfinished, really unimpressed with this one. I kept thinking, maybe it'll get better, and it really had the potential for it, but it keeps dragging on and on and on and on and on......snoresville. Click here for the Amazon Link of the book.

  • The Panda Theory- Pascal Garnier

Rating- 6/10 One word to describe this book would be 'Mysterious'. Interesting book, very French Noir style of writing, it was easy to read and a good page turner. You were immediately gripped to the story from page 1 and all the characters of the book, you literary couldn't tell what was coming when you turned the page, or where the story was heading. Very interesting way of writing, it was also sometimes funny which was unexpected and had a dry, dark and wicked sense of humour about it. You could tell the main character really struggles with Life and being alive, so you follow him on his day to day tasks and adventures. It also was a touch philosophical too with the whole 'panda theory' which I wasn't expecting and quite poetic. Good short story to read, and I read it in 3 days which was refreshing Get yours HERE folks on Amazon Books

  • The Mistake I Made- Paula Daly

Rating- 6/10 I liked the look of this book, and chose to read because it had a touch of 'indecent proposal' to it, from that 90s movie with Robert Redford and Demi Moore. Where he pays to have one night with her.. so I was drawn to the idea and the story behind this book. The lack of sex scenes was kinda disappointing but it's super easy to get into, I was gripped to the characters soon as I started reading it, it was interesting to see the choices and reasons why the main character Roz, chose to do what she did and I could understand why she had to do it. It touched a lot on human mistakes and the trouble we can get into, in terms of debt and trying to survive with not much to go on. The book had a good twist at the end which you could sort of see coming so I wasn't as surprised by it, but still an okay twist. The last few chapters were very readable, the main character was sometimes annoying but you either like her or you don't. All in all it was an okay read, good fast read, nice ending too, and very realistic people type of book. You could relate to a lot of the situations they were in. Liked it. • The Call of the Wild- Jack London

Rating- 10/10 Y'know, for a book that is only 125 pages long it really packed a punch! This is a really great book, I was not expecting that at all. I actually thought it would be an easy read and sort of a softer adventure story but it was the total opposite. It went straight to the point and I soon realised this wasn't going to be an easy read. It's a very vivacious, rowdy, bold book. I liked the the way the story was told, as if someone was telling us the story of Buck, the dog in the book. I could totally picture an old man reading it aloud to me, like Morgan freeman or someone who is wise. At times it was really hard to read this book because it was so raw, and you felt sorry for the dogs in it, also it was gruesome and gory too at times. Which was so unexpected. The story itself is so amazing, about this dog that was taken away from it's comforting world and thrown into the harshness of a cold wilder territory in Yukon, Canada. Buck learns how to embrace his true self in the end of the book and you follow him through this crazy epic journey and shows us how he got to be the amazing dog that he is in the end. Such a riveting story, I really really liked it! It's all about life and death and claiming your place in this world, told through a dog's eyes. So cool.. I really loved this book. Such a great adventure story too and would highly recommend anyone to read it. Intense, and so real. It kinda took my breath away, I was like, whoah, wow. What a book! I Loved it. Seriously grab yourself a copy right Hurrr from Amazon Books. Great Book!

  • Notes from the Underground- Fyodor Dostoevsky

Rating- 8/10 Well it turns out I liked this book a whole lot more than I thought I would have! It took a while for me to grasp the beginning of it, and some of it was kind of like reading a riddle.. and was trying to fit the pieces together in my brain, but once I hit the middle of the book it started to get very interesting and readable. As soon as the main character began to tell his story then it really kicked off. This is a great book, the main character is crazy, or maybe he's not crazy and we the 'sane people' are the crazy ones...he plays a lot with human behaviour, life and the struggle of being human, alive and what we live for. I really like term 'Notes from the Underground' to me, it referred to his mind and his space in this world which is such an interesting way to put it. You can also in a way really relate to the main character and his paranoia and anxiety, torment towards everything and everyone. It was so well written too with great references throughout the book from the great novelists of the past, to history, poets, and major events in the past. I loved it. Such a huge change from my trashy thriller & sappy romance books. It's a great 'Life affirming' book and would highly highly recommend it. Two thumbs up from me! 👍👍 Check it out on Amazon Books Here!

  • New York, Actually- Sarah Morgan

Rating- 9/10 I never really understood the phrase when describing a book that goes, 'I devoured it'. Well! Let me tell ya somethin', I literary inhaled this book! Finally understood the term, devoured, wow what a page turner this book was. At first glance I actually laughed out loud at the ridiculous title of the book and thought, hm.. shall I read this?? looked like a fun read, so why not, and boy was it! I really enjoyed reading every moment of this book, I literary whizzed right through it! Inhaled it, breathed it, flowed right through the pages. It's written like a movie lol I could literary picture the characters as if it was a rom com I was watching. It was mostly conversational which is an interesting way to write a book. It was sassy, fun, witty, very New York style, fast paced romance. And what a beautiful ending! So cheesy but so sweet, almost made me cry, almost. It was nice to read about a love story, although I don't think true love like that exists, I hope it does.. but yeah it was lovely. The characters sounded so typical Hollywood style appearances which was funny, but I would definitely read her other books too, totally loved this super girly rom com book! Even recommended it to my girlfriends ✨ Also it made me want a dog even more! The main character Molly has a very loyal Dalmatian and it's so cute in the book. But dogs are hard work tho...so won't be getting one any time soon. All in all loved it :) Definitely grab your copy HERE on Amazon Books folks!

  • I See You- Claire Mackintosh

Rating- 7/10 I gotta say, I did not see that plot twist coming! Then there was another one at the end too! Great twist, I do love my plot twists.. I liked how the book was centred around the London underground tube and how commuters take the same route everyday, so it was very relate-able in that kind of modern Londony sense. It was more of a crime thriller as opposed to just a psychological thriller which I wasn't expecting. Lots of police detective kinda work which was cool. It was a good story, not the best book I've read but defo a great twist in the end. Very gripping and a super easy read too. Get yours HERE on Amazon Books

  • Swing Time- Zadie Smith

Rating- 3/10 Weird book. This was a best seller book of 2017 and is in top 10. I kept seeing people reading it too which was promising. But man, this was a hard book to read, oh boy, the beginning was so so slow! Took me forever to read it cos I was bored as fuck with it. The whole book is basically this 32 year old girl following a celebrity around the world as her PA. it kind of has no point at times, but it did have some interesting characters and family relationships as the book went on, it definitely got better towards the end, it was a political book too which made it more interesting than her just following a celeb. And mentioned a lot with poverty in Africa, but also a very materialistic book. So I was kinda conflicted by that. But again in the end, I wasn't really moved or anything, more glad to be done with it actually and move on with my life. This book was a gift and I'm pretty sure I got it cos I'm black (it's a black people book really) lol white people sometimes smh 😪 Check it out here on Amazon Books tho.

  • Little Girl Gone- Alexandra Burt

Rating- 5/10 Not so much of a thriller as the book promised, but it was an interesting read. It was about postpartum depression after having a baby, but in the end it really ends well and has a nice happy ending. There wasn't much of a twist but more curiosity as to what had happened to her baby and who took her. I liked the book in the end and was happy to finish it. Nice easy read.. and nice ending. Good closure.. I could sleep well at night after that book. Get yours here on Amazon Books peeps.
